State Senate to Take Up Auto Insurance Rate Rollback
Wisconsin drivers should not carry as much auto insurance under a bill expected to be adopted by the Senate Tuesday. The measure would roll back the minimum liability coverage increased by the legislature two years ago. the bill would reverse many of the big jumps in premiums paid by or thousands of drivers due to higher coverage. But some lawyers say there is no guarantee that rates would go down. And opponents criticize a number of reduced fees in the bill. For example, drivers would no longer be able to “stack” coverage – which the uninsured motorist coverage policyholders can use three of their vehicles to help for a crash involving one of the vehicles pay.
It would also cover such purchases for the first time in a high-risk group in which they would pay more. That is against the law at this time. And the bill could result in “reducing clauses.” That means an insurance payment of one policy can be reduced if a director receives money from the policy to another vehicle. Opponents say that motorists would not be the full benefits they pay for it. But Assembly Republican Kevin Peterson of Waupaca says drivers should be entitled to purchase such coverage as long as they talked about it in advance.
