Rescue them from loan sharks
Social development, women, children and people with disabilities MEC Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi have been called on by the people of Taung to rescue them from loan sharks and poverty. As part of her programme, The MEC visited the area to meet with communities. The theme of the campaign is “listening to the heart-beat of communities.” the people demanded action against local businesses. The local businesses offered them small loans.
“Poverty will never leave this village,” said Ntombi Kashane. “We are suffering from loan sharks,” he added. Magogong village had a high rate of child-headed families because of HIV-Aids. To stem idleness which led to social ills, Mokomele-Mothibi was told of the urgent need for recreational facilities in Leshobo village. The community of about 600 people suffered high levels of unemployment, Community representative Vela Ntuni said.
There was a need for a campaign for youth to take up training programmed and skills development, Vela Ntuni said. They did not receive adequate attention from politicians, Lotlhapong villagers complained. The visit was part of her ongoing process to get what people on the ground felt about their communities, Mokomele-Mothibi said. Ntombi Kashane said “many people were identity documents and bank cards are with loan sharks and they only receive around R30 at the end of each month.”
