Health Insurance for All Would Bring Better Care for All
Recent elections have made clear that the American people are tired of wasteful, especially by our government. We all hoped that health reform would save money, but after the politicization of Washington, it seems like they have nothing to cut down on costs.
The way I see it, the core of the debate revolved around whether the country should try to get the health insurance industry to determine whether to dump for a single-payer, wholly publicly-managed system. That was their choice. Left alone, the insurance system of payment for health care is priceless and a path of self-destruction. Insurance companies were competing for profits by insuring the healthy and the sick dump. More and more people went without insurance and the use of expensive emergency room when needed. Those costs in turn forced those of us with insurance, raising the rates even higher.
It is important to understand that without this mandate, no one would have to buy insurance until they were sick. Requiring coverage without a mandate would bankrupt the industry. And when death is imminent and when appropriate, the medical home can be a natural process rather than a miserable, fruitless end on a breathing machine, for example. It is remarkable how much money it could save.
