A group discussing loan program for third world women
CHICO — The work, which had accomplished over the past five years would be discussed by the Women’s Microfinance Collaborative while the next loan would be discussed during its annual meeting. On Sunday, the meeting would be held at Chico Women’s Club, 592 E. Third St. This meeting would be started at 2 p.m. The Chico group would give donations to a national nonprofit organization, which gave loans to women who had small businesses.
Therefore, the total of its donation on Sunday would be $5,000. The local women, who gave what they could do, had helped women in Haiti, Malawi and El Salvador, in addition to Guatemala. The loans of $500 or less would be paid back within a year and came together with an educational component. The single mothers felt that the women had gotten classes in health, finance, business and other areas.
Their enterprises comprised of weaving or farming to small retail operations. However, the small retail operations could make their life prosperous. This local group was made up of about 50 women from Butte and Tehama counties. Their finance had improved about $25, 000 in their group’s five-year life. They were happy because they could rise up from downturn.
